Creating your group icon

Docs » Working with Groups » Creating a group icon

Before you start this tutorial you need to make sure that you are an Administrator of the group whose icon you want to change and that you have an image which you would like to use for the new icon.

Creating a group icon

  1. Start by clicking the "Administration" link on the right-hand side of the group's Home Page.

  2. Choose "Your Group Icon" from the list of headings on the Administration page.

There are now four ways to choose the image you wish to use:

In my photostream

Use this option if you have already uploaded a suitable image to your Flickr photostream.

  1. Click the "In my photostream" link under the subtitle "Where's the image you want to use?".

Flickr now loads a page of up to 99 thumbnails of image in your photostream. If the first page of thumbnails does not contain the image you wish to use then the navigation buttons at the bottom of the screen can be used to move through all the images in your photostream.

  2. Click on the thumbnail which represents the image which you wish to use for your group icon.

Now jump to the Icon Builder section.

On my computer

Use this option if you have a suitable image on your computer but have not yet uploaded it to your Flickr photostream.

  1. Click the "On my computer" link under the subtitle "Where's the image you want to use?".

You will be prompted to browse your computer for your image.

  2. Click the "Browse" button and locate the image on your computer. Select it and click "Open"

  3. Back on the Flickr page, click the "UPLOAD" button and wait for your image to appear.

Now jump to the Icon Builder section.

On the web

Use this option if the image you wish to use is available on the web.

  1. Click the "On the web" link under the subtitle "Where's the image you want to use?".

  2. Enter your image's URL in the box under the title "What's the image URL?".

There are various tips on this page for ensuring that you enter the URL of an image and not just a web page. Read these carefully if this is not something you have done before.

  3. Click the "SEND URL" button and wait for the image to appear.

Now jump to the Icon Builder section.

Ready made icon

To the right of the three links used above is a fourth option which is labelled "PSST! If you have a 48x48 icon ready, upload it here."

Use this option if you have already prepared a 48px by 48px icon.

  1. Click the browse button, locate the required image on your computer and select it. Click "Open".

  2. Back on the Flickr page, click the "UPLOAD" button and wait for your icon to appear.

Your icon has now bee set to the image you uploaded.

The Icon Builder

Your chosen image now appears on a page entitled "The Icon Builder".

In the top left-hand corner of the image you will notice that there it is overlaid with a dashed white square which has handles in its four corners.

The next step is to use this device to frame the part of the image you wish to use as an icon.

You can enlarge the square selection tool by clicking and dragging its corners outwards. You can move it by clicking and dragging within the square itself.

Please note: By default the selection tool is always a perfect square shape to ensure that the selection you create is the right shape for the group icon. If you wish to create your icon from a non-square shape (the results will be square so distortion will occur) the deselect the "constrain selection to square" checkbox above your image.

When you are happy with the size and position of the selection tool, click the "MAKE THE ICON" button at the top of the page.

All done, new icon created!
